Tate Alexander was back in town.

News of his father’s stroke spread through town in waves. The first recounted Harrison Alexander in a heated phone conversation with an unidentified person, according to the household staff. The yelling could be heard from the man’s study, bouncing off the walls, and landing in the servants’ quarters in an unintelligible rumble. No one had come forth to claim a presence on the other end of the line. There was speculation, though, none of it good.

Bet it was one of his mistresses. Maybe mistress number one found out about mistress number two.

Could have been a deal gone bad, or not the way Harrison expected.

Had to do with money and power, no question. Somebody was getting squeezed, and maybe this time that somebody was Harrison.

Or, and this was the most speculated, It was his son, Tate.

Hence came the second wave of information that rolled through town.

Tate Alexander is back in town!

Goodness gracious, it’s a miracle…

Six long years away…

Will he stay?

Will he make Reunion Gap his home again?

Rogan had heard the rumors, but he’d tried to ignore most of them. He didn’t want to think about Tate, the one Alexander he could tolerate until the guy betrayed him. And his father? Was there even a speck of decency in the man? Doubtful. He pushed aside thoughts of the Alexanders and went back to installing a light fixture, but damn if Elizabeth didn’t creep into his brain. This was getting ridiculous. The woman had taken up residence in his head, and if he were honest, he’d admit she’d set up house in his heart, too. In less than six hours they’d get together, talk about likes and dislikes, hopes and disappointments. He sighed, muttered a curse under his breath. They’d share.

That word was as unfamiliar as its meaning, but it was necessary in any long-term relationship. They both knew it, had agreed to it, though he’d felt like he was going to puke when he suggested it, and she looked like she might join him. Slow and steady so he didn’t scare her or himself.

He hadn’t wanted to share with anyone in a long time.

But Elizabeth was different.

Or maybe she made him different.

The door to his storefront accounting office opened and Rogan glanced up at the visitor. A man, tall, mid-thirties, dark hair, nice suit. Tate Alexander.

“Hello, Rogan.”

Tate Alexander moved toward him with the casual grace that comes with being born into money, and lots of it. The guy had never seemed interested in the money, had almost acted apologetic when a stranger found out he was an Alexander. But there was no getting around the name or the power it wielded. Rogan tossed his pencil on the desk, crossed his arms over his chest. “I heard you were back. Sorry about your father.”

“Thanks.” He pointed to one of the chairs across from Rogan. “Mind if I sit?”

“Sure.” Why was he here? It better not have to do with—

“I did not touch Marybeth.” Those silver eyes burned into him.
